I will offer you a calm, and accepting space, where you are my sole focus and priority. By working with you in a relaxed and nurturing manner, my hope is that you will feel comfortable with me and know that you can trust me and the space I provide. Taking the step of coming to counselling can be very daunting. In our initial sessions it may take time for you to feel comfortable to talk or share. Opening up and sharing things about yourself that you have never shared before may leave you feeling a little vulnerable and scared. I am fully aware of how this can feel and understand this. I will support you through this.
My aim as a counsellor is to try to understand how your life feels for you. I seek to understand what your experiences feel like, and their impact on you. I will be beside you helping you to explore, reflect and gain a deeper understanding of yourself. Part of this is often reflecting on how you see yourself and more importantly how you feel about yourself. Exploring and gaining an understanding of all parts of you, may then connect you with and enable you to trust in your own inner voice and instincts. In time you may also be able to tap into your own inner strengths and resources. Feeling heard and understood may be a step towards further understanding your needs and ensuring that they are met.
As well as offering therapy in private practice, I have volunteered as a counsellor at a charitable counselling service based in Cirencester. Prior to training to be a counsellor, I worked in the care sector for several Local Authorities for a decade.
My previous experience is working with adult clients who have experienced issues including: anxiety, depression, loss, low self esteem, childhood sexual abuse, abandonment and attachment issues, family conflict, feeling overwhelmed by anger, domestic abuse, workplace stress, the impact of affairs, emotional and physical abuse, imposter syndrome, loneliness, relationship issues.
Due to previous job roles/experience, training and personal experience I have a special interest in offering counselling to the following client groups:
Clients living with the menopause and the many feelings and issues that this brings: health issues, the accelerated ageing process, feeling invisible, feeling a loss of purpose, feeling the loss of child bearing years, change in libido, disturbed sleep patterns, feelings of anxiety and panic, brain fog, and the overall feeling of aloneness with this and that no one else can understand what this feels like.
Clients who have experienced or are living within a military life: this unique and very insular and private world, the isolation, the hierarchy and all that this brings, feelings of being unable to share difficulties such as anxiety and depression for fear of being labelled or being unable to do the job or care for your family, the pressure to cope, the aloneness of this life, being in abusive relationships as a service person or as a ‘dependent’ and being unable to share this or feeling that there is no where to turn.
Male clients: who find it difficult to understand, express and share their thoughts feelings and emotions and how debilitating this can be in their personal relationships and in the work place who feel that they are unable to show any vulnerability. Males who are unable to talk to about their mental health perhaps due to their relationship, job, family status, or are affected by issues such as an abusive relationship or by a loss of some kind.
